ExtraMostra is the ongoing series of events Mostra runs throughout the year and, most likely, the project’s most significant initiative beyond the four days of the festival. We programme in venues and clubs, cultural institutions, record shops, bars and self-managed spaces across Barcelona, but also in other Spanish cities and internationally, with the aim of making room for local artists and for proposals that rarely find a place within the regular circuit of existing programmes.
How it began, in 2022
The series was born at the same time as the festival. Between February and March 2022, even before the first edition took place, we ran thirteen dates across Barcelona, Valencia, Madrid or Seville: Salvadiscos, 33|45, Bar 18, Buena Onda Social Club, Killing Time, Gordo, Moog, Laut, Lolita, Ballesta Club, Switch Pocket Club and a broadcast from Subradio.
Season by season
The second season, running from October 2022 to June 2023, was the longest of them all, with twenty-five events. In Barcelona we passed through Garage 442, Centre Cultural Albareda, Espai Jove la Bàscula, Nitsa, Subradio, Switch Pocket Club, Salvadiscos, Lolita, Moog, Sala Taro, Paral·lel 62, Curtis Audiophile Cafe, Laut, 33|45 and Hangar, closing with Mostra All Stars at Sala Vol. Away from home we reached Madrid alongside Onyro, Seville and Valencia, and made the international leap to London with one long day alongside Astral Industries at Ormside Projects and Iklectik, to Berlin with Art Bei Ton and Affin at Suicide Circus, to Porto at Gare, and to Amsterdam with Into the Universes and Isotoop at Doka.
The third season, between December 2023 and March 2024, added twelve dates and took us to another continent for the first time: on 25 December 2023 we programmed at Cabaña Nyctibius in Barbas Bremen, Colombia, together with the Natural collective. That season also saw us at Red58, at Nitsa, at Human, at Sala Upload with Ameba, at LAUT, at Sala Taro and at 78|33, and outside Barcelona at Dabadaba (Donostia) with Nigma, at Masada (Milan) with Acquario, at La Boule Noire (Paris) with Lowless and once again at Gare (Porto).
In the fourth (2024-2025) we passed through Zulú Klub in Valencia, Konvent in Berguedà on New Year’s Eve, Moonback (Granada) with Klub Kollective, Nitsa, and London’s Plantroom with Introspective Electronics. In the fifth (2025-2026) we have programmed at Human, at Les Enfants with Noizer, at LAUT, at Amsterdam’s Garage Noord with Minimal Collective, and in the Poconos, in the United States, in a special gathering with Delayed, among others.
Beyond Barcelona
Whenever we work outside Barcelona we always try to bring an artist from the city with us. It is a small decision, sustained over time, that has meant many of the names who started out playing a bar in Poble-sec have ended up performing in London, Berlin, Milan, Amsterdam or New York, and that the local scene travels on the same terms as any guest artist.
Artists and causes
ExtraMostra has also been the route through which artists we would never otherwise have reached have entered the project. In 2023 we ran an open call for women artists and dissident identities under thirty for the event at Espai Jove la Bàscula, and a different one in 2024 at Centre Cultural Albareda as part of UPCArts’ Music Data programme with Digitalfems and EllESmusic. Several of the artists we discovered then have continued to appear in the series ever since.
The series has also allowed us to support causes close to us. In December 2023, on the occasion of that first intercontinental ExtraMostra in Colombia, we ran a fundraising campaign for children from the local communities of Pereira together with the Natural and Communion collectives. A year later, in December 2024, we closed a second campaign for those affected by the DANA floods on the occasion of our ExtraMostra in Valencia. And at Konvent, that same December, the MostraRespect team delivered a training session on sexual and LGBTIQA+phobic violence, and together with our host project we built a collaborative protocol for the night.
Recorded and published
Almost everything that happens at ExtraMostra is recorded and published on our SoundCloud profile, so the series has a sound archive of its own, season by season. Over five seasons we have produced a total of 57 events and worked with 193 different artists, across spaces in Barcelona including Laut, Casa Montjuïc, Sala Taro, Upload, Centre Cultural Albareda, Espai Jove la Bàscula, Paral·lel 62, 33|45, Bar 18, Salvadiscos, Curtis Audiophile Café, Red 58, Buena Onda Social Club, Moog, Switch Pocket Club, Apolo and Razzmatazz.
