Albert Salinas and Philip Sherburne founded the Balmat label in 2021 after three years as co-hosts of Lapsus Radio, a weekly show on Spain’s Radio 3. Balmat’s mission is simple: to foster new ideas, expand upon personal obsessions, and put all-encompassing sounds out into the world. But where Lapsus Radio focuses on a wide range of electronic sounds, encompassing everything from IDM to techno to footwork, the duo’s sets together typically skirt the edges of the dancefloor, if not steering clear of it altogether.
True to the experimental spirit of Mediterranean and Balearic electronic traditions, Balmat DJs are interested in creating enveloping environments that incorporate ambient music, atmospheric soundscaping, and low-BPM rhythms—music with a cloudy outline yet a distinct sensibility.
“Balmat” means “empty” or “void” in Catalan. But quite apart from any negative connotations, they prefer to think of it in terms of possibility: a space waiting to be filled.
